Band Name: Treble Tones
Band Hometown: Livonia Michigan
Year: 1964 to ?
Comments: This band was one of Livonia Bentley HS top bands and was the genesis of many great bands to be formed in the future, e.g. The Flaming Embers for example. I am hoping this post will attract some or all of the members to contribute. The Lead guitar player was Dick Hodge.
Also the Landeers (sp?) where another hot band from Livonia Bentley High School and again formed and trained many accomplished players that did well later. From this group Jim Bugnell bass player later was the bassist with The Flaming Embers, and had four gold records with Hot Wax MoTown. If we can slot these two group is here I'm sure Jim will contribute dialogue and pics, and can give good info on the Treble Tones also.

Comments: Not a comment about the band, but wondering if Rich Spang is the same Rich Spang that played bass for a couple of years (around 72-73) with Warren and me - had a few gigs (we played blues and rock)and lots of practice in a house on Chalmers in Ann Arbor. If this is the same Rich Spang and he sees this, contact me at timke1@hotmail.com. I have made some CD's out of old taped practice sessions if interested.

because everyone liked us so much! The $$ was pretty good back then so we played there for 10 years; then
we all got burned out. So, we've lost contact with each other...........and that's where things are now. Gotta go.

Your Hometown: Wayne, Michigan
Band Name: The What Four
Band Hometown: Wayne, Michigan
Year: 1969
Comments: I knew The What Four because we went to the same high school, Wayne Memorial. I was in Concert Choir with Phil and I think Bob, too. And Bill Keister was in my art class. He was a great artist. He did psychedelic paintings. He actually painted one on my 1969 Yearbook. I always wondered what happened to Bill and Phil. I knew them better than the others. They played at the high school dances. I read on your site and other sites that Phil went on to join Mitch Ryder. I didn't realize he left school to do that. I liked Phil a lot. He was fun in Concert Choir and was kind of shy and funny. I never saw him at too many school functions other than choir. I read that Phil is now living and playing in a band in Savannah, GA. I saw a more recent picture of him and he looks pretty much the same as I remember him. We are having a 35 year (geesh!) high school reunion on October 2, 2004 at the AMVETs hall on Merriman Rd. and I hope some of these guys will come.

Name: Chip Metcalf
Email: chipsmovie1@yahoo.com
Your Hometown: Tucson, Arizona
Band Name: Intruders/Dearly Beloved
Band Hometown: Tucson, Arizona
Year: 1963-1968
Comments: The Intruders/ Dearly Beloved were one of the most popular bands in Tucson for 6 years. The members were Larry Cox-Lead Vocals, Terry Lee-Lead Guitar, Tom Walker-Rhythum Guitar, Pete Schuyler-Drums. Shep Cooke- Bass/flute/piano. There were other members I remember Del Livingston played bass before Shep joined in 1965. and Pete resigned in 1967 to be replaced by Rick Mellinger.

I was heavily influenced by the Beloved as my sister dated Pete a couple of times and Pete taught me to play the drums. I remember him telling me his cousin played for Chubby Checker. They were the number one band in Tucson and recorded alot . Most notably a novelty song called "Peep Peep Pop Pop" on the Boyd label and later picked up by Columbia and signed to a contract. I could go on and on about these guys and the many memories I have. Equiptment, I remember Terry and Tom had Fender Jazzmasters and Fender piggyback amps. Terry's was sunburst and Tom's was cobalt Blue. Pete had Beatle Ludwig pearl diamond drums and Rick had gold metal flake. They were managed by a guy named Dan Peters and later by disc jockey Dan Gates who is still in Tucson last I heard at the country station. I would love to get ahold of anyone in Tucson to talk about these guys and look at old phot'o's. I have a few. They were the opening act for many big names that played in the 60's and toured quite a bit themselves. Larry Cox was a huge influence as well. He was killed in a car accident in July of 1967 after the group was coming back to Tucson for him to get married after a gig in Tarzana. They had an album in the can and it was later released (1997) by Bacchus Archives. (Lee Joesph.) anyway remember being there when they played with Paul Revere and the Raiders / Rascals/ Mammas and Pappas/ James Brown. They just never could seem to get the break they deserved. Anyway could go on for hours but not enough room. here. Their story should be made into a movie. It has it all. When they played a Beatles song they truly sounded like them. Great Voices and great showmanship. Well if ya want to talk and share info about this great group give me a hollor.-------Chip

Band Name: The Diaboliques
BandHometown: Glendale
Year: 1964-67
Comments: The Diaboliques were the house band for the community dance at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Kids came and danced (slacks and ties for the guys, dresses for the girls) from all over San Gabriel Valley, and then we would cruise from Bob's Big Boy in Pasadena to Bob's in Glendale, and then back again, racing the Little Old Lady of Pasadena. She always won.

Dan,
What about the Royal Coachmen from Redford Township? This band was one of the most popular bands in the Det. area for many years. They were , indeed, one of the first bands formed in the suburbs. They did cut a record before anyone else, and yes it was played on KNR and WXYZ. Also played in New York and other markets. Their demise?-They did only limited vocals, mostly instrumentals. They did by the way, in my opinion, have at the time ,the best drummer to come out of the Det. area. The name of the record , produced by Don Davis was Tidal Wave.

Band Name: The Catatlinas
Band Hometown: Stockbridge & Adrian, MI
Year: 1960-64?
Comments: My Uncle Grant Higgins, played in this band he played guitar and sang some. Others were Mack Vickery, wild Bill Emereson,Tom Armstrong and Ed Corn(aka Hollie. I'm told these guy's were a really rockin band, apparently won some battle of the band contest's in the Southeast Michigan. Mack Vickery was from adrian, he went on to Nashville and wrote country music for lots of stars like George Strait,George Jones, Hank Jr.,Tonya Tucker and many more.He just passed away this Dec.23, lot's of info on the web. Wild Bill Emerson a legend in the local scene of the 60's, also from Adrian, known to set his guitar on fire, or jump onto tables and stomp his way to the floor while playing a solo, he played his guitar upside down and backwards. Bill is still writing music with his wife Jody in the Nashville area. They've written for John Anderson, Hank Jr., George Jones and many more. Grant passed away in 1973, he had recorded some records on the Limelight label, as well as the local Karen label, one on Twirl. He had Ollie Mclaughlin for a manager(of Del Shannon fame).Apparently he was on T.V. in Detriot on some teen music show( still looking for footage f that). Grant also had some connection with Ronnie Hawkins of Ronnie and the Hawks. After 40 years family members have forgotten lot's, photo's are lost, records missing or broke. I'm trying to put together a memorial CD for everyone in the family, it will include photos, music and stories. These guys played at places like The Rendevous in Lansing, Wampers Lake, Drayton Plains Inn, The Rooster in Detroit, The Windsor Supper Club, Club 92 Manchester, the Ohio area and even toured down south, met and played football with Elvis. Can anyone out there help? Stories, photo's, records, flyiers, film footage ect. I'm willing to purchase any related material. I would really appreciate any help in my search.

Thanks,
Weldon

Comments: I noticed that there was no mention of Bobby Thompson playing drums for either Fresh Tar or the Plain Brown Wrapper ... when Scott Durbin had PBW on its last road trips, and Fresh Tar was jammin at Carl's Bad Tavern, it was "T-Tommy Thompson" keeping time on drums ... his playing should be mentioned ...

Band Name: See my post (more than one)
Band Hometown: FL
Year: 1965-1972
Comments: I actually found 4 Florida bands I was looking for on this site.
For three years now I've been working on a book about teen center/garage bands who played along the I-4 corridor (Daytona to Clearwater). I found 4 of the bands on my list right here: Tampa's Tempests, Leesburg's Color Corporation, Clearwater's Just Us (and their later incarnations) and What's Left from Orlando/Winter Garden. I was very pleased!
However, the email link on What's Left isn't any good and I was hoping to contact them because I have a tape of one of the members in a later group I wanted to pass on to him. So What's Left guys, SOMEONE please email me.

ANY band who was around in those days from any of the I-4 towns and surrounding areas (like Leesburg etc) who would like to be included please send me (and this great site!!) your info! Thanks for the great memories!

BTW I run a tribute site for a lil ole teen center band out of Tampa FL who made it to the big time called "The Outlaws"http://home.tampabay.rr.com/rootbound/outlaws/page1.htm
Come on over!
