(sp?) was the front man. Greg had just returned
from an Amboy Dukes concert in "Dee-troit" (accent
on the first syllable) where he scored a Ted Nugent
pick that he wore around his neck on a gold chain.
(Who could blame him?) The Haze played the big July
4th Party at Lakewood Park in 1969 and blew the
kids away -- and the old folks out of their
lawnchairs. One rockin' band. Don't recall the
other players, but something tells me they're still
makin' music. Anybody know for sure? If so, please
tell Rick or Greg about MFB. And by the way, I have

Year: 1968-69
Comments: These guys were a little older than I was
and the only reason I got to hear them was that my
older sister was friends with the band members.
I remember Randy Fields playing keys, harp and
doing vocals. Courtney Johns (who could forget that
name?) was lead singer. Bill VanSpronsen's name
also comes to mind, but I'm not sure now if he was
a player or just Randy's roomie. (I *do* remember
that both of them were tossed out of the Malley's
Chocolate soda fountain -- where everybody went for
a sugar buzz in those days -- for "getting hair all
over the counter" as an irate waitress put it!)
The band made great music in the tradition of
Lovin' Spoonful, Doors, Byrds and other
contemporary big-time acts and was the first band I
remember getting a grip on stagecraft.
Randy is a furniture maker these days in
Aymesville, Ohio and the son of a cabinetmaker. He
built the band's PA columns which were trimmed to
look like giant grandfather clocks on either side
of the stage. Randy also build "dummy" amps that
the band would trash by beating them to shreds with
cheap pawn shop guitars at the end of a show. (The
real amps were safely behind the dummies.) Tres
kewel, huh? We thought so. in '69!
George - thanks for
the info...maybe you could convince Randy to
contribute the whole story to the site?

Nugent had left the band, and a ruff guy named

times at the Grande, any evidence that the group

I've searched the internet, and these guys have all

up of jazz players, country rock, soul and hard
rock players.
In the same tune (often originals) it would go from
rock or folksy country into a far out Miles
influenced jazz and back again.
Dan Jacobs on Trumpet and Flute with Echoplex. Dan
O'Connor on guitar and vocals (many originals),
Michael O'Sullivan on keys and early synth. The
drummer and bass player's name escape me for the

It was definitely the best band I ever played in,
most original, most innovative and had a great
following in East Lansing and Lansing.

Comments: Talkin' to Steve Farmer last year - he
recollected to me how he'd "punched out" DJ Robin
Seymour of "Swingin' Time" fame (the local
bandstand-type program for local talent of the late
60's) when apparently the Gang didnt win on an
applause meter against several other bands. Seymour
held his hand over their heads and Steve felt they
had indeed gotten the most response from the
audience and complained. Then according to style,
made his complaint 'known'. I suspect they were not
asked to return to the Swingin' Time Show , no
report as to Robin Seymours' subsequent disposition
on the matter. Steve Farmer soon joined Uncle Ted
in the Amboy Dukes and wrote many of the songs on
the 1st album which are possibly still in royalty
dispute along with Rick Lober's...credits which
Rick strongly feels have never been paid by Ted or
the record company.
Thanks for the info
Brian, and to anyone else out there that remembers
The Gang, don't miss their March 20th show at Tenny

Comments: These guys were awesome. At the time they
were the best band in high school. The Friday night
dances at the old Wayne Rec. building were the
best. The dances in the gym were also great. I
remember them setting up for a real concert in the
school Auditorium near the end of school. It was
awesome, the crew that ran the stage lights did the
lighting for the show and it was really great. They
did some new songs and some of their favorite
covers just like being at COBO!!! I like to think I
was friends with the band because we also sang
together in a mens chorus group called the Varsity
Singers and we won a Michigan Male Chorus
competition in 1968 and got to perform on stage at
the Masonic Temple in Detroit with a chorus from
Europe. It was a big accomplishment for our chorus.
I remember hanging out with Bill Keister in his
room in the parents basement in Wayne. Bill had
more "stuff" crammed into his room than anyone else
I knew. There was stuff everywhere, it was very
cool stuff too. He did mostly rythym guitar work
but some lead stuff too. Shack was awesome, Phil
was solid an Bob was "Tight" as the drummer. Having
an organ/keyboard filled it all in. Doug played
mostly on a Hammond but the effect was the Leslie
organ speaker. Three guitars, great vocals, tight
drummer, awesome keyboards, they were on their
way.
Like a lot of the bands
from this era, the wheels came off and I am just
happy to have found this website. The turn-on came
from the recent Bob Seger induction and web
interest in that got me to a Seger history site.
That led to the Doug Brown name coming up with a
band called the Omens and my question to that sites
host about our Doug Brown. Small world
sometimes.
Do you know if there is
any way to get hold of Bob Swain? He is listed here
as the person who submitted the info for the page.
