We're a bunch of musically bored twenty somethings looking to bring rock and roll back to where it belongs: THE PEOPLE!!!!!! We'd love to get in touch with some of the original garage players and if any want to get back together and jam, maybe do some regional gigs, just for kicks, laughs, definitely get in touch with me! we don't have the gig horror stories yet, but many of my old bands did! available on request...

Comments: Hi Im Tommie the guitar player for the Ones, i loved the article about us, and it brings back great memories. Im still playing and doing acoustic things now, but i still have the urge to crank it to 10 and loose my mind! Danny, Ronnie and all the guys are my brothers and i love them very much, I miss Danny, he was my best friend, we traveled a lot of roads together, and kicked a lot of crowds, when i heard he passed away, i was devistated, and still am. When i play, i look next to me and i still see him standing there, when i play i play for him, and all the memories. The Ones will always be a part of me, and i thank god i had the chance to know and play with some of the greatest musicians of our time. Thanks Danny, we will jam again someday, and i know we will kill em like we always did!

Band Name: The Shadows.....The Music Shoppe....Roy Cost..solo
Band Hometown: Conway, Arkansas 72034
Year: 59-66.Shadows.. 69-73 Music Shoppe
Comments: I recorded at Lyn-lou in 65 with Bill Black producing "Ketchy"/"You Can Count On Me" (by The Shadows) I recorded "East Of Tulsa"/Are You Really My Girl" "By Roy Cost & The Music Shoppe)at lyn-lou in '69 produced by Larry Rogers, engineered by Steve Bogard. I am solo now with my newest cd "When A Man Loves A Woman" My career parallels The Castells very closely and I too played Barton, Arkansas 's prom in the 60s. Ron Hall has contacted me about his new book & hopefully I'll be included.Cost) My favorite groups back then were "The BoTops" "Kimball Coburn" "The Pacers" "Booker T. & MGs" and "TheCastells"
Bill Black will always remain one of all time music heroes. He taught me a lot in 1965 on Chelsea Steet.
Stations Programming The Shadows and The Music Shoppe in those days was the giant KAAY & locals. Also WSM and WlAC. We had the #1 song for awhile on Little Rock's KALO. "East Of Tulsa" was programmed by many of the truck driver stations of the 60s and 70s and the giant KAAY in Little Rock.
Thanks,
Roy Cost

Name: george ghetia
Email: gghetia@cox.net
Your Hometown: Lakewood, Ohio
Band Name: The Haze
Band Hometown: Lakewood, OH
Year: 1969-70
Comments: Rick Wagner played bass and Greg Balow (sp?) was the front man. Greg had just returned from an Amboy Dukes concert in "Dee-troit" (accent on the first syllable) where he scored a Ted Nugent pick that he wore around his neck on a gold chain. (Who could blame him?) The Haze played the big July 4th Party at Lakewood Park in 1969 and blew the kids away -- and the old folks out of their lawnchairs. One rockin' band. Don't recall the other players, but something tells me they're still makin' music. Anybody know for sure? If so, please tell Rick or Greg about MFB. And by the way, I have a V-E-R-Y cool poster by John Brite of Rick and his hollow-body bass (Guild?) taken from a photo John shot of the band on stage on the 4th.

Name: george ghetia

Your Hometown: Lakewood, OH
Band Name: The Penny Arcade
Band Hometown: Cleveland, OH
Year: 1968-69
Comments: These guys were a little older than I was and the only reason I got to hear them was that my older sister was friends with the band members.
I remember Randy Fields playing keys, harp and doing vocals. Courtney Johns (who could forget that name?) was lead singer. Bill VanSpronsen's name also comes to mind, but I'm not sure now if he was a player or just Randy's roomie. (I *do* remember that both of them were tossed out of the Malley's Chocolate soda fountain -- where everybody went for a sugar buzz in those days -- for "getting hair all over the counter" as an irate waitress put it!)
The band made great music in the tradition of Lovin' Spoonful, Doors, Byrds and other contemporary big-time acts and was the first band I remember getting a grip on stagecraft.
Randy is a furniture maker these days in Aymesville, Ohio and the son of a cabinetmaker. He built the band's PA columns which were trimmed to look like giant grandfather clocks on either side of the stage. Randy also build "dummy" amps that the band would trash by beating them to shreds with cheap pawn shop guitars at the end of a show. (The real amps were safely behind the dummies.) Tres kewel, huh? We thought so. in '69!
George - thanks for the info...maybe you could convince Randy to contribute the whole story to the site? -Dan

Band Name: The Lourds
Band Hometown: Detroit
Year: Late 60's
Comments: I can't believe that in all this time, NOBODY has come up with any info on The Lourds. I think the last time I saw Pete Primm, Tom Noel, and Jon Finly was at a party at Pete's house. Ted Nugent had left the band, and a ruff guy named George Cole took his place. After seeing Jon 2 or 3 times at the Grande, any evidence that the group even existed was gone.
I've searched the internet, and these guys have all got to be hiding under a rock. Can it be that they could have been such an influence on the early Detroit music scene, and yet vanish without a trace??
Come on guys!! One of you has to be out there, or somebody has to know what happened to them!!

Name: Dan Jacobs
Email: srecords8@aol.com
Your Hometown: Bellaire, Michigan
Band Name: Severe Hands
Band Hometown: East Lansing, Michigan
Year: 1970-71
Comments: Severe Hands was a very unique band, made up of jazz players, country rock, soul and hard rock players.
In the same tune (often originals) it would go from rock or folksy country into a far out Miles influenced jazz and back again.
Dan Jacobs on Trumpet and Flute with Echoplex. Dan O'Connor on guitar and vocals (many originals),
Michael O'Sullivan on keys and early synth. The drummer and bass player's name escape me for the moment.
It was definitely the best band I ever played in, most original, most innovative and had a great following in East Lansing and Lansing.

Name: Brian
Email: droflov@yahoo.com
Your Hometown: Birmingham
Band Name: The Gang
Band Hometown: Detroit
Year: 1968
Comments: Talkin' to Steve Farmer last year - he recollected to me how he'd "punched out" DJ Robin Seymour of "Swingin' Time" fame (the local bandstand-type program for local talent of the late 60's) when apparently the Gang didnt win on an applause meter against several other bands. Seymour held his hand over their heads and Steve felt they had indeed gotten the most response from the audience and complained. Then according to style, made his complaint 'known'. I suspect they were not asked to return to the Swingin' Time Show , no report as to Robin Seymours' subsequent disposition on the matter. Steve Farmer soon joined Uncle Ted in the Amboy Dukes and wrote many of the songs on the 1st album which are possibly still in royalty dispute along with Rick Lober's...credits which Rick strongly feels have never been paid by Ted or the record company.
Thanks for the info Brian, and to anyone else out there that remembers The Gang, don't miss their March 20th show at Tenny Street Roadhouse in Dearborn. Maybe if we're lucky, we'll get to see Steve punch somebody out!

Band Hometown: Fairview and nearby Cliffside Park, NJ
Year: 1967
Comments: We played the Lincoln Elemementry School Spring Dance and we did nothing but physcodelic rock and the principal of the school kept yelling at us to turn down but we didn't. We had a huge real stuffed aligator on stage and we put stinky inscence sticks in it's mouth and smoked naughty stuff right on stage. The crowd of kids went nutz and the band got in trouble the next day cause we all went to that school. It was worth it though!! Your Hometown: Westland "Shacktown". Michigan
Band Name:
What Four
Band Hometown: Wayne, Michigan
Year: 1966 to 1969
Comments: These guys were awesome. At the time they were the best band in high school. The Friday night dances at the old Wayne Rec. building were the best. The dances in the gym were also great. I remember them setting up for a real concert in the school Auditorium near the end of school. It was awesome, the crew that ran the stage lights did the lighting for the show and it was really great. They did some new songs and some of their favorite covers just like being at COBO!!! I like to think I was friends with the band because we also sang together in a mens chorus group called the Varsity Singers and we won a Michigan Male Chorus competition in 1968 and got to perform on stage at the Masonic Temple in Detroit with a chorus from Europe. It was a big accomplishment for our chorus. I remember hanging out with Bill Keister in his room in the parents basement in Wayne. Bill had more "stuff" crammed into his room than anyone else I knew. There was stuff everywhere, it was very cool stuff too. He did mostly rythym guitar work but some lead stuff too. Shack was awesome, Phil was solid an Bob was "Tight" as the drummer. Having an organ/keyboard filled it all in. Doug played mostly on a Hammond but the effect was the Leslie organ speaker. Three guitars, great vocals, tight drummer, awesome keyboards, they were on their way.

Like a lot of the bands from this era, the wheels came off and I am just happy to have found this website. The turn-on came from the recent Bob Seger induction and web interest in that got me to a Seger history site. That led to the Doug Brown name coming up with a band called the Omens and my question to that sites host about our Doug Brown. Small world sometimes.

Do you know if there is any way to get hold of Bob Swain? He is listed here as the person who submitted the info for the page. If so please email me back. If not, oh well. Maybe he'll see the comments and get hold of me. By the way, great site.
