The Rubber Band
Revere, Massachusetts

1965-1969

Kenny and I grew in the same neighborhood and knew the others guys from school. Paul was in my homeroom and knew John and Steve Sarmanian. Kenny knew Steve Coviello from some class. We somehow all got together and decided to form a band. We had a pretty good run for being a bunch of young kids just trying to be cool.

Personnel:
Mark Pennington - Rhythm Guitar and Lead Singer Kenny DeRosa - Bass
Steve Coviello - Lead Guitar
John Aloisi - 2nd Lead and Rhythm
Steve Sarmanian after Paul Palladino left - Drums

Influences:
Beatles, Stones, Cream, Hendrix, Airplane, Byrds et al.

Setlist Sample:
Get Off Of My Cloud, Somebody To Love, Purple Haze, Live, Mustang Sally, In The Midnight Hour, and even Boogaloo Down Broadway.

Equipment:
Mark -'54Strat, no kidding. My grandmother gave it t me.And I ran it through a Brand New Bandmaster head with a 4x10 cab. Kenny played a Precision through a brand new Bassman with cab. Steve played a LP and I sort of remember a Firebird. And plugged into a Twin. John played a natural Rick325 into I think an Ampeg. Paul had a Slingerland set and then Steve played a Ludwig kit.

Rehearsal Space:
First at Paul's basement and then at Kenny's sister Kathy's house.

Band Vehicles:
Whatever our parents drove worked well for us.

Fashion Statement:
Far out, groovy and psychedelic. And the chicks dug it!!!

Best Gig:
A Battle of the Bands at the Boys Club in Lynn, Mass. We were great and we kicked ass bigtime. And the chicks dug us!!! Although I can't remember what we won.

Gig from Hell!:
I don't remember one in particular but I'm sure it was somewhere in the beginning of the band before we figured out just how much we were being screwed by club managers and promoters.

Last Gig:
Because I was president of the Drama club, I supplied the entertainment so I didn't have to be in the play. We decided to play "The End" by the Doors. Looking back, I guess that it's a little ironic. Needless to say, the reaction was somewhat "mixed".

Comments:
The time in the band has to be the best four years of my teens. The music scene was exploding and we were caught right in the middle of it all. I'm sure if we had known that we could become millionaire rock stars that dated supermodels and flew arounbd the world in our own private jets, that we would still be doing it. And given the opportunity, I know we would do it all over again. Peace, man.

Where are they now?

I have seen John Aloisi several times at the New England Guitar Show that was held for about five years here in the Boston area. I'm embarrssed to say that I can't remember what he is doing, but I do know that he still plays but not so much the guitar as the bass. The last time I saw him about 3 years ago he had just purchased a 5 string bass from luthier Roger Sadowsky in NY. Kenny I run into at the Home Depot more than anyplace else. I think he's a court officer. Steve Coviello I haven't seen in at least 15 years.I was at a mall one day and saw him with his wife. I joked with him about getting the band back together but his family commitments would have kept him from doing this. I went into the Marines after high school and then played the folk circuit for a couple of years and then drifted away from playing at all. I decided to travel around for awhile and have settled back in Massachusetts where I own my own stained glass business. Paul I run into sometimes and as far as Steve Sarmanian is concerned, none of us know what happened to him.
