Quando
Mt. Gilead, Ohio

1964-1965

Their isn't a lot to our bio. The Quandos formed out of a previous group (the name escapes me) and played around our central Ohio community. Jim Callahan was the founder and lead singer. As personnel changes took place and music interest evolved the group was renamed The Daylight Blues Band. Other people involved with the group included Danny Cook, John Petrie, Pat Nichols, Randy Crum. Eventually we dropped from the 'grarage band' efforts and converted to country music which better fit my rock-a-billy roots.

Personnel:
Jim Callahan - Guitar & Lead Vocal
Steve Owens - Drums
Ambrose Furgeson - Bass
Rick Van Shoyck - Guitar & Vocal
Gary Lee - Lead Guitar

Influences:
Our influences were ceratainly the emerging 'English' groups, but we also had roots in early rock and roll. Our set list from one night tells a lot about our interest and influences.

Setlist Sample:
Walkin The Dog, Summertime Blues, Bring It On Home To Me, Money, What'd I Say, Twist And Shout, The House Of The Rising Sun.

Equipment:
Two of us had Gibson guitars. Mine was a cherry red 335 special, Gary had a Les Paul solid body. Ambrose played a Hagstrom Bass.

Rehearsal Space:
My Living Room if my dad wasn't home.

Band Vehicles:
Our travel arrangements were dependent on who had gas in their tank.

Fashion Statement:
We wore open collar shirts with turtle neck dickies under them .. hotter than hell, a bad idea!

Best Gig:
By far our best gig was the General Telephone Corporation Christmas Party. It was the most money we ever earned as a group!

Gig from Hell!:
We were to play the Derrick Club in Mt. Gilead and only two of us showed up. I had my guitar and a borrowed keyboard and Ambrose was their with his bass .. not a good night. I think we played for maybe 20 minutes and packed up.

Last Gig:
I'm not sure I remeber the last time we played together. We were constantly changing personnel and names.

Comments:
We were young and foolish, believing dreams really do come true.

Where are they now?
Summer, 2004

Jim Callahan (the author of these notes), is now a songwriter and lives in Nashville. Although I've had no commercial success I still enjoy being where the "boys make the noise," in Music City. Steve Owens was (last I saw him), traveling the country with a rock band based in Canada. A few years back I was told by a "home-townie" that Rick Van Schoyk had gone to rock'n'roll heaven and that Ambrose Furgeson was headed toward New Orleans. Gary Lee .. .I have no idea.

Jim Callahan today, working on a new tune!
