The Outcasts
Glendale, Wisconsin

1964-1965

During Xmas break 1963, Dennis Schaefer and I were riding in my moms car going to the Browndeer skating rink. We were listening to the local top 40 radio station, WOKY when "I Want To Hold Your Hand" came on. I was in the front seat and Dennis was in the back and said "turn that up, they're a new group from England". We just listened and when the song was over I turned around and looked at Dennis and he said "thats pretty good" and I said "yeah"! Right then and there we decided to start a band.

Drummer Steve Brown:
This was taken in our lead guitar players parents garage, August 1965. Too bad my mom cut out the rest of the drum set when she took the picture. The drums are Ludwig, downbeat model, oyster pearl , Zildjan cymbals.

Personnel:
Dennis Schaefer - Lead Guitar/Vocals
Tom Erbes - Rhythmn Guitar/Vocals
Tim Peckham - Bass/Vocals
Steve Brown - Drums
Jack Smith - Lead Vocals

Influences:
Kingsmen, Dick Dale, The Ventures ,Stones

Setlist Sample:
louie louie, tossin n' turnin, walk don't run, misirlou, little latin lupe lu

Equipment:
2 fender statocasters, both sunburst finish,2 fender twin reverb amps, kay bass guitar and a silvertone bass amp, ludwig drums and electavoice 664 microphones,we didnt have a p.a. system so they sang thru the amps. sounded pretty muddy.

Rehearsal Space:
Everybodys basement and garage

Band Vehicles:
Since none of us were old enough to drive everybody's parents cars, the lead guitar players dad had a '58 Cadillac, we could fit a lot of equipment in that car.

Fashion Statement:
Blue Pendleton shirts over white shirtstight black racer slacks or black stretch levis, black beatle boots from Tomhmacan shoe store.

Best Gig:
Riverview grade school home coming where we graduated from the year before and were able to play in front of our old classmates and teachers who thought we were just a bunch of hoods.

Gig from Hell!:
St. Issac Joes ice cream social which was our first public performance and we were paid with free ice cream. The lead guitar player got us the gig because we played for free and we needed the exposure. I said ice cream won't pay for a p.a.system!

Last Gig:
A farewell party for myself and family at the rhythm guitaists home...we were moving to Chicago. The irony of this last gig was the last song we played was Kansas City, ("hey, hey, hey...Beatles version from Beatles '65 album), one year later we moved from Chicago to Kansas City.

Comments:
As you can tell from my bio we moved a lot when I was in my teens. The music opened a lot of doors.
I am grateful for this website... thanks for a place to tell this story!

Where are they now?

After I moved to Chicago I exchanged letters with Dennis but we never saw each other again. I went on to play in other local bands in the Chicago area. My sister went back to Milwaukee to visit a friend and said she went to a dance where Dennis was playing. His group was called Love. I lost contact with all the others as well.
