Midnight Riders
Forest Lake, Minnesota

1966-1967

The Midnight Riders truly were a Garage Band in the most classic sense. There wasn't really any "real" musical equipment, just basically junk. The band's members were ages 7, 9, 11, 12 and 13. The name Midnight Riders came from Paul Revere & The Raiders' album "Midnight Ride". Mike Petersen got his nickname "Fidne" because he tried copying Phil "Fang" Volk, the bassist for Paul Revere & The Raiders. "Fang" had his name written on the back of his bass, and that band was constantly on ABC TV on various Dick Clark shows. Mike Peteresen tried writing FANG on the back of his bass with a Magic Marker, but it came out looking like "FDNE" (Mike was just 7 years old).

Personnel:
Brian Tolzmann - Guitar, Vocals
Tracy Tolzmann - Vocals
John Petersen - Drums
Terry Selleck - Vocals
Mike (Fidne) Petersen - Bass

Influences:
Dave Clark 5, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Byrds, Kinks

Setlist Sample:
Hanky Panky, Hungry, Gloria and a Brian Tolzmann original entitled "Little Toronado".

Equipment:
A $27.00 Stella accoustic guitar with a Wollensak tape recorder microphone taped to it, played through the tape recorder's P.A. system. A toy bass guitar that probably cost $15.00. A Revere snare drum, and a tambourine with our "cool" Midnight Rider logo hand-drawn on it with a black Magic Marker.

Rehearsal Space:
Brian Tolzmann's garage

Band Vehicles:
None

Fashion Statement:
Basically whatever boys between the ages of 7-13 normally wore in the 1960's.

Best Gig:
Lawn party ouside Brian Tolzmann's bedroom window. Every girl in the neighborhood was there, and we told them to scream. There was a funeral at the church nearby, and the screams could be heard there.

Gig from Hell!:
None

Last Gig:
Probably the lawn party.

Where are they now?

Brian and Tracy Tolzmann and Terry Selleck went on to form the band PHREEN in 1971 (with Tim Tolzmann and Mike Dailey), which evolved into LIBERTY in 1972. LIBERTY was named the 1972 Minnesota Original Music Band of the Year, and also won the 1972 Midwest Summer of Sound competition. Brian Tolzmann became news director at Minneapolis radio station KUXL in 1974. (KUXL was once owned by Wolfman Jack.) Brian Tolzmann won a first prize at the 1978 American Song Festival, and now works as a researcher in St. Paul, Minnesota. Tracy Tolzmann is now a mailman, Terry Selleck lives in southern Minnesota, and both Petersen brothers live in the Twin Cities area.
