Culture The Sky Millburn/Short Hills/Denville, NJ 1964-1970 |
![]() |
The Lyzzerds was our first
band, started in 7th grade while most of us were
taking guitar lessons from Wayne Anderson of the
Millburn Music Center. The name is obviously our
childish spin on The Beatles... Our first "gig" was
at a talent show at Delbarton School. We played (a
probably-not-great version of) The Beatles' "You
Can't Do That" and "I Want Your Love," an original
song written by Myke's older brother Jim. We had
the fever... Personnel: Influences: Setlist
Sample: Equipment:
Rehearsal
Space: Band

Statement: Best Gig: Gig from
Hell!: Last Gig:
Culture (not The Culture...) was our next band, the
name coming from our mutual HS "Sociology" teacher,
Mr. Hemlin. He thought he was Johnny Carson... We
kept the name till about 1968. We played lots of
dances in the Short Hills/Milburn, NJ area.
Some places we played:
Millburn Jr. High. Christ Church (Short Hills), St.
Rose of Lima (Short Hills), Oak Knoll School of the
Holy Child (Summit)
The Sky was our third band, from about end of 1969
into 1970. The short name was because we were
really, really into The Who. After Myke went off to
a different HS, it was whittled down to a
"power-trio" with Kev on bass, Dennis on drums and
Dave on guitar. We played lots of Who, Led Zep,
Hendrix, Jeff Beck Group and, inexplicably, Jethro
Tull! (How did we do it without the
flute?)

Dave Goessling - Guitar
Myke Connell - Guitar

Christ Church dance
(Short Hills, NJ) c.1966 - we did our Who guitar
destruction act, including smoke bombs. Threw
smashed guitar into the audience a' la "Blow Up."
We were banned from playing there ever
again...
Denville, NJ dance:
stumbled upon a drug deal in progress and were
(wrongly) pursued by knife-wielding
crazies...
We're still playing!
See our website: www.boonescuttle5.com
Where are they now?
We reformed with some additional members
who were pals back then anyway: now called

BooneScuttle5 (an amalgam of all past band names.) We play about 5-6
times a year
at big parties and for money at some NJ bars
