The Long Johns
Garmisch, Germany

1966-1967

We were a bunch of Army brats thrown together in a small military community. With only about 15 American teenagers on post, the talent pool was, uh, limited. But we had a great time playing good music badly. Whenever a new kid arrived from the States, we would swarm him/her to borrow their new records and find out what was being played on American radio. We played the local teen clubs (very limited selection of venues) for about a year, until we wore out our welcome, and until more talented German groups began to appear. Eventually, we just sort of faded away. This was inevitable, anyway, since being military kids, we were transferred away one by one.

Personnel:
Randy - Vocals, 2nd Guitar
Keith - Vocals
Jeff - Bass
Bebe - Drums
Tim - Lead Guitar

Influences:
Beatles, Beach Boys, Them

Setlist Sample:
Sloop John B, Louie Louie, Snoopy vs. the Red Baron (no kidding!)

Equipment:
Cheap equipment. Klira (German-made) guitar & bass. Silvertone guitar. Airline amp w/ 8" speaker for lead guitar. Various small no-name amps. Tape recorder microphones. Not a brand name among us.

Rehearsal Space:
Back porches & crowded bedrooms.

Band Vehicles:
VW Beatle or public transportation.

Fashion Statement:
Collerless surfer shirts.

Best Gig:
Sadly, none qualifies as "best".

Gig from Hell!:
Local teen club in 1967. Who would have known that 15 songs wouldn't fill a 3-hour dance? We must have played Gloria 10 times.

Last Gig:
Too forgettable to even remember.

Comments:
I still have the Airline 5-watt class-A amp. It doesn't go to gigs, but it's a blast to jam with at full gain with my Heritage Millenium guitar.

Where are they now?
Summer, 2004

I recently heard from Jeff, our bass player, who is retired in South Carolina. It's rumored that Bebe, our German-born drummer, immigrated to Australia. Yours truly, the lead player, is alive and well in north Texas playing oldies and Christian rock/roll, thankfully on better equipment.
