The Guilloteens
Memphis , Tennessee
1964-1966

We were playing together in a tour road version of the Mar-Keys, we were the rhythm section. One night we were playing a gig in Mississippi at a college. We were the only part of the band that showed up. They expected a performance and we gave them one. On the way home we thought we would put together our own band. We rehearsed for about 6 months and started playing teen clubs like the Roaring 60's, in Memphis. We were also on a local TV program called "Talent Party" which the #1 DJ in Memphis, George Klien hosted. We couldn't find a name we liked so he had a name the band contest and the prize was a date with one of us. I think Joe was the prize. I know it wasn't me! We got a manager and I went to see my friend Elvis. I told him about our band and he picked up the telephone and called a friend of his, Tony Farrah, who owned the Red Velvet Club on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. He hired us just on Elvis word and we were off to a good start (we were Elvis' favorite group, he often tucked himself away in a dark corner to hear us play).

Best Gig:
Louis - Not a gig but we worked with Phil Spector when we first went to L.A. We thought we would be signed with him. I learned so much about recording from him in the brief time we spent in his studio. It was such a let down when our manager signed us with Hanna Barbera Records. That was the beginning of the end of the Guilloteens.

Last Gig:

Comments:
Louis left the band late in 1965 in a dispute over money with their manager. The guys had worked hard for over a year, had a hit record and had nothing to show for it. Laddie and Joe felt they should stick with the manager so Louis went back to Memphis. I don't have much information on the group after he left. They released 3 more singles. One for HBR and 2 on Columbia. Buddy DeLaney replaced Louis on at least one of the releases. Where are they now?

Louis is still in Memphis, but got out of music for a living about 10 years ago. "For the first time in my life I play for myself and enjoy it. No deadlines to meet. My wife, Lynn and I plan to open a recording studio that is affordable for new talent in the near future." Laddie has finally recovered from a car wreck about 2 years ago and he and his wife are living West of the Mississippi, (he asked us not to say where). He is working with a local theater group there. Joe last we heard was living in Texas and working in a family business.
