Absence of Reason
Villa Park, Illinois
1965-1970

In '65, it seemed every guy in school was learning the guitar. Somehow, Gerry and I (Moriarty) got together (don't remember how), and things went on from there.

Personnel:
Steve Carpenter - Vocals (65-66)
Dean Karau - Drums
Steve Main - Keyboards
Dave Moriarty - Guitar/Vocals
Tom Schroeder - Bass
Gerry Schumacher - Guitar/Vocals

Influences:
Doors, Beatles, other Chicago-area garage bands

Setlist Sample:
Light My Fire, Ticket to Ride, Gimme Some Lovin'

Equipment:
Some Gibson guitars and amps. Lots of off-brand stuff I don't remember.

Rehearsal Space:
Dave's basement, Steve Main's basement.

Band Vehicles:
Supposedly, Tom's truck, but since that was always broken down, whatever cars we could get from our parents.

Fashion Statement:
In the first year, we had matching blue shirts with white dots, but fashion soon became anarchy.

Best Gig:
High school homecoming dance, or maybe a private party at a classmate's house. All our friends were there, everybody enjoyed the music and had a good time.

Gig from Hell!:
Woodstock. No, no! Not *the* Woodstock - Woodstock, IL is a small town northwest of Chicago. We played at a community pool party, attended mostly by sixth graders who didn't like "hippies" and spent the afternoon throwing things at us.

Last Gig:
Can't remember.

Comments:
A playlist (subject to memory lapses) is at my web site www.csupomona.edu/~djmoriarty/

Where are they now?
Gerry is retired from his position as arborist for the city of Villa Park. I'm (Moriarty) professor of biological sciences at Cal Poly University in Pomona, CA. I've lost track of everyone else.
