Rio Smokehouse
Detroit, Michigan

1971-1973

Jim Hanson from St. Louis MO, Steve Gaines from Oklahoma, Bix Clements from Detroit, and Dennis Tieken from Illinois. We met each other in the Illinois, Iowa area while playing in different bands. Jim, Bix and Dennis moved to Detroit and later called Steve to join.We played all the clubs in and around Detroit, were signed to Westbound label that had Parliment Funkadelics, Nancy Wilson, Ohio Players, yet they did not have a white band. They all loved our sound, John Sinclair of the Rainbow Peoples Party tried to sign us but we were already signed with Westbound. That kind of pissed him off and we were in a way kind of black balled from the Ann Arbor scene, so we went on tour in the Midwest and returned to Toronto, Canada to record at RCA studios. Jim and Steve had written some nice material for the album, some of the stuff you have heard later on Lynyrd Skynyrd albums while Steve was with them. While in Toronto a lot of friction went down between the Manager of the band and Jim and Steve. Jim moved to Jamaica, Steve joined Detroit.
