The Checkmates
Manilla, Philippines

1962-1966

We formed to play the then-popular intrumental music of the day, with Mick on lead guitar. We apparently were noticed in the US (remember, we were just a high school garage band). The lawyer of Sonny Charles and The Checkmates wrote us a threatening letter suggesting we change our band's name or face legal action! The Stingrays rose from the ashes of the Checkmates.

Comments:
I'd do it again in a minute. We were a great cover band.

Where are they now?

Mick passed away in 1983; Bill lives in Phoenix and plays keyboards and guitar for fun; Brooke lives in France & England and still dabbles in music; Ray plays for fun and has a mini-collection of 8 guitars and 5 amps; Eddie and Jay we've lost contact with.
